Free Adults-Only Night at the Toy and Miniature Museum
Explore Trash or Treasure? The Curious Items and Strange Artifacts of Just Colcord
April 18, 2013 (KANSAS CITY, Mo.) – Looking for something FREE and different to do in Kansas City with friends or that special someone? Explore the Toy and Miniature Museum’s temporary exhibition Trash or Treasure? The Curious Items and Strange Artifacts of Just Colcord at Adults-Only Night on April 25 from 5-8 pm. Colcord explores the streets of Kansas City for discarded treasure to transform into characters with elaborate stories: a robot, a heist team, or a wizard with a miniature lair. Each creation evolves from other’s trash, repurposed and reborn into a new lifecycle. Experience Colcord’s evolving, organic characters in stop motion films, talk with the artist, and use your own imagination to create a character and storyline from recycled items.
Myron, Colcord’s first figure, is a streetwise, artful dodger who summoned the others into existence. “I like to work with old things. I want to create and transform. I’m going to look for the rusty screws—I’m looking for the things that are organic,” Colcord said. Colcord views himself as the father, facilitator, believer, and builder of his characters. He finds inspiration in his surrounding environment, literature, and pop culture.
This is Colcord’s first museum exhibition of his work alongside his stop motion films. A self-trained, RAW artist, Colcord began creating toys out of found materials in 2011. He usually spends a year exploring a particular vein of art—his past endeavors have included a cast of puppets, handmade jugging balls, and carved wooden wands.
Trash or Treasure? will be on view until June 9, 2013 at the Toy and Miniature Museum of Kansas City.
