KC Wind Symphony "An Evening in London"
The Kansas City Wind Symphony under the leadership of Dr. Phil Posey and Associate Conductor, Pat Setser, climaxes their 15th Anniversary Season with a pops concert entitled “In Town Tonight – An Evening in London.” The concert, free and open to the public, is slated for May 5, 2013, at 7:00 in the Sanctuary of Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas. This final concert features English favorites including Eric Coats’ “Knightsbridge March – In Town Tonight” from his “London Suite,” Gustav Holst’s “Second Suite in E-flat” and Percy Grainger’s “Handel in the Strand.” The Strand, a street in London, is the heart of the theater district and the home of English musical comedy. Grainger imagines jovial old Handel clogging down the Strand to the strains of modern English popular music. The audience will join the ensemble in singing Percy’ Grainger’s setting of “Danny Boy” and a medley from Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Featured in the Gilbert and Sullivan “Sing-A-Long” are memorable tunes from “The Mikado,” “Pirates of Penzance” and “H.M.S. Pinafore.” Members of the ensemble will form a lead singing group to help the audience sing these enchanting tunes. Vocalists Linda and Lee Finch, Lester Morris, Jo Catherine Payne and Teresa Miller will put their instruments aside to form the singing group. The program will close with a suite from the ballet “Pineapple Poll” based on the music of Sir Arthur Sullivan. Dr. Phil Posey, conductor, promises a memorable night of good music and good fun as the Kansas City Wind Symphony brings their 15th Anniversary Season to a close.
The Kansas City Wind Symphony was founded in 1998 by the Music Ministry of Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, Kansas. In April of 2008 the group made its debut in Carnegie Hall in New York City as part of the “Ensemble Spotlight Series” by MidAmerica Productions. In September of 2011 the KC Wind Symphony was one of the featured community groups at the opening of Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City. The ensemble recently presented their “13th Anniversary Gala” in Helzberg Hall at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts with Bobby Watson, Kansas City jazz great, as the featured soloist.
