Half Century Club Creates Scholarship Fund to Honor FHSU President

With the initiation and support from FHSU’s Half Century Club, as well as other private donations, the Dr. Edward H. Hammond Endowed Leadership Scholarship has been established. The scholarship fund was created in honor of President Hammond’s leadership and quarter of a century in his role as President here at Fort Hays State University. The scholarship will support a third or fourth-year FHSU student with a 3.5 GPA or higher. The recipient of this scholarship must display strong leadership skills; campus and community involvement; and have financial need as determined by the financial assistance office of the university.

The Half Century Club, which consists of Fort Hays State alumni from the past 50+ years, initiated the scholarship effort. It was through a challenge gift made possible by a friend of Dr. Hammond, Mr. Clay Blair, that raised the bar to bring the total to a minimum of $100,000 by December of 2013. A letter was sent out toward the end of 2012 to former Student Government Association (SGA) officers of FHSU asking them to consider a contribution to the scholarship fund. The SGA leadership over the years has been instrumental in working with current and former university administrations. The Half Century Club and Foundation could not think of a better group to start with in this effort.

Clay Blair’s challenge gift of $50,000 meant that all contributions (through December of 2013) would be matched 1:1 when designated to the Dr. Edward H. Hammond Endowed Leadership Scholarship. The response from past SGA officers and members and the Half Century Club has been tremendous!

The current value of this fund is $100,100 and growing. We don’t want to stop here however and encourage all alumni and friends, Kansas Legislators, and Kansas Board of Regents, current and past, to consider honoring our President of the past 25 years. If you’re interested in showing your support of current and future FHSU students, as well as Dr. Hammond, you can give a gift today by visiting https://secure.fhsu.edu/foundation/Default.aspx. Please list “SGA Initiative” as the area of designation for your donation.

For any questions that you may have regarding this scholarship fund, please feel free to contact your FHSU Foundation at 785-628-5620 or foundation@fhsu.edu.
