Walk to REbeL on April 27 encourages positive body image

Non-profit REbeL Delivers the Message that all Individuals are “Beauty-full”

Overland Park, Kan. On Saturday, April 27th, non-profit organization REbeL will host a 3-mile walk to provide support to area teens and adolescents and raise awareness with all residents who are bombarded with ads for appearance-based products that can lower a person’s self esteem. The Walk to REbeL will take place at Blue Valley Northwest High School, 13260 Switzer Road in Overland Park, Kan. FedEx is the event’s Diamond Sponsor.

REbeL is a student-driven education and prevention program designed to address eating and body image concerns. The organization was founded by Dr. Laura Eickman, a licensed psychologist who counsels young people with eating disorders. Eickman was recently named one of Nonprofit Connect’s Rising Stars of Philanthropy. REbeL organizes clubs and peer leaders in area middle and high schools to build self-esteem and confidence in both female and male adolescents and teens. REbeL delivers the message that all individuals are beauty-full.

Walk participants can register online through April 23rd at www.rebelks.com/walk-to-rebel. Discounts are available to those who register before April 1st.

Children under the age of 5 can attend for no cost unless they desire a t-shirt.

Packet pick-up will begin on April 27th at 7:45 a.m. and the walk will begin promptly at 9 a.m., rain or shine. All ages are welcome. All participants who register by April 19th will receive a walk t-shirt.

Walk participants and their families and friends will be treated to a group warm-up, prize drawings, refreshments, DJ entertainment, face painting, a photo booth, and affirming messages intended to promote positive body image.

About REbeL Originally piloted as a student group at Blue Valley Northwest High School in Overland Park, Kan., REbeL is a not-for-profit organization (REbeL, Inc.) designed to address eating and body image concerns. REbeL launched additional chapters at the following high schools for the 2012-2013 school year: Blue Valley; Blue Valley North; Blue Valley Southwest; Blue Valley West; Olathe East; and Notre Dame de Sion. The organization is also working to develop a middle school program and currently has a pilot group at Prairie Star Middle School in Leawood, KS. More information can be found at www.rebelks.com.
