Pro Musica to Perform High Renaissance Music
Rockhurst Pro Musica will present vocal and instrumental music from the High Renaissance, 7 p.m., Wed., April 3, Mabee Theater. Pro Musica is the University’s new instrumental and historical performance ensemble. Pieces will primarily be performed on period instruments and sung in the original dialects of French, English, Italian and German. The featured music flourished around the turn of he 16th century. It was a period dominated by composers from the Low Countries—modern-day Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg—that include Johannes Ockeghem, Heinrich Isaac and Josquin des Pres, who was considered the pinnacle of the “Ars Perfecta.” As the High Renaissance period progressed, the Madrigal emerged as a genre first developed in Italy and then made famous for our contemporary culture by Elizabethan England. This late period will also be represented in Pro Musica’s performance of delightful old repertoire. The concert is free; tickets are not required. Mabee Theater is located in Sedgwick Hall on the Rockhurst University Campus, 54th Street and Troost Avenue.
