Visit Missouri's Lake Country on JCPRD day trip set for April 23

Missouri's lake country is the destination for a late April day trip being planned by the 50 Plus Department of the Johnson County Park & Recreation District.

Participants will travel by motorcoach to Truman Lake and Warsaw, Mo., where the town will roll out the red carpet with an assortment of unique shops selling antiques, homemade gifts, and souvenirs. This Missouri Lake Country Day Trip will begin at Truman Lake's visitor center where visitors will have a spectacular view of the lake and dam from the observation deck. You'll meet a park ranger and her about the reservoir, its fish and wildlife, and the hydroelectric plant at this popular recreation area. The next stop is the Lost Valley Fish Hatchery, one of the largest in the nation. Aquaculture biologists will conduct a tour of the production room and hatchery and explain about the millions of fish produced annually for private and public waters throughout the state. Travelers will enjoy the facility's 12,700-gallon fish tank containing bass, muskellunge, crappie, and the largest bluegill you'll ever see. Lunch for the group will take place at the Common Ground Cafe in Warsaw's historic downtown.

The Missouri Lake Country trip will leave from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23, and return about 5 p.m. that day. The cost for this ten-hour trip, including transportation, tours, lunch, and a 50 Plus escort, is $69 per person. To find this program in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under 50 plus and then under travel. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keywords “day trip.”

While the JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the District’s Registration Department at (913) 831-3359, and if space is available without forfeiting the place of a person over 50, their registration can be taken.

The JCPRD Activities catalog, with information and a registration form, is available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches. For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online and for updated program listings, visit the district’s website at www.jcprd.com.
