EQUAL LOVE WORTH FIGHTING FOR: KC ATHEIST GROUP TO SUPPORT LGBT COMMUNITY AND REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS AT KIRK CAMERON EVENT
KANSAS CITY, MO -- Actor Kirk Cameron's widely publicized statements against gay marriage and reproductive rights have prompted the Kansas City Atheist Coalition to organize a demonstration this Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Raytown.
Members of the atheist coalition, along with the Kansas Equality Coalition, which works to promote LGBT equality, will gather from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, on 75th Street across from the church, 10500 East 350 Highway, Raytown, MO 64138. The demonstration will coincide with Cameron's appearance at a marriage seminar titled "Love Worth Fighting For." The demonstrators will be advocating for “Equal Love Worth Fighting For.”
Cameron has stated, on major media outlets, that "homosexuality is unnatural, detrimental and ultimately destructive" to civilization and that abortion is "wrong under any circumstances," including rape and incest. He's closely involved with the Living Waters ministry, whose website describes homosexuality as a destructive lifestyle on par with pedophilia, adultery, alcoholism and drug addiction.
"The local secular community has grown increasingly concerned about the religious right's war against marriage equality and reproductive rights," said Sarah Hargreaves, president of the Kansas City Atheist Coalition. “As the Supreme Court prepares to hear arguments on a landmark case that could invalidate laws banning gay marriage nationwide, the local atheist community and others who support separation of church and state want to make it clear that we won't be silent in the face of bigotry."
Several local groups with hundreds of members have expressed interest in the protest, she added. "We encourage everyone who cares about gay rights and women's rights to research the views of Kirk Cameron, consider the implications of those views and join us on Saturday to support progressive values and equality," she said.
