YOUNG INNOVATORS GEAR UP FOR LOCAL VEX ROBOTICS COMPETITION IN Kansas City, MO

Teams of Robot-Building Students Put STEM Skills to the Test at the KC Youth Technology Fair / VEX Robotics Competition

Kansas City, MO. February 16th, 2013 – More than 100 leading middle and high school VEX Robotics students and mentors from around Missouri, (ST. Louis, Adrian, Belton, Ballwin, Raymore and Kansas City), Omaha, NE., and Council Bluffs, IA. will unite at the Southeast Community Center, 4201 E 63rd St., KC.,MO. on February 16th. 2013 for the KC Youth Technology Fair / VEX Robotics Competition. The action-packed tournament will feature more than 25] teams who will compete with and against other schools in a series of back-to-back robot challenges, made possible by the following sponsors Blue Cross & Blue Shield Kansas City, AT&T, The Community Capital Fund, Sprint, Research Medical Center, Surewest, and Blue Symphony. Participants will compete for the championship title by strategically executing the game Sack Attack, driving robots they designed, built and programmed from the ground up using the VEX Robotics Design System.

The KC Youth Technology Fair / VEX Robotics Competition is one of a series of VEX Robotics Competitions taking place internationally throughout the year. VEX Robotics is the world’s fastest growing competitive robotics program for middle schools, high schools and colleges around the world, with more than 4,000 teams from 20 countries that participate in more than 250 VEX Robotics Competition events worldwide. The competition season culminates each Spring, with the highly-anticipated VEX Robotics World Championship event, uniting top qualifying teams from local, state and international VEX Robotics Competitions.

“Today’s youth need to have the innovation, creativity and problem solving skills they use in competitions to become tomorrow’s technological leaders,” said Lewis Walker, President of The Black Family Technology Awareness Association. “This tournament provides kids with an engaging hands-on learning experience that promotes a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Hosting this event in an underserved community brings awareness of technology to a broader segment of Kansas City.”

The VEX Robotics Competition serves as a vehicle for students to develop critical life skills such as teamwork, leadership and project management, honed through building robots and competing with like-minded students from the community in a pulse-pounding, exciting, non-traditional environment. The VEX Robotics Design System was built from the ground up and designed to be an affordable, accessible and scalable platform used to teach science, technology, engineering and math education worldwide.
