Lee’s Summit, MO. – With the help of UMKC members of Enactus, Hillcrest Transitional Housing of Eastern Jackson County is finding new ways to increase awareness of and gain funds necessary to support homeless families in the metropolitan area reach self-sufficiency.
Enactus (previously known as Students in Free Enterprise) is an international college student organization whose goal is to apply an entrepreneurial approach to create a more sustainable world. Locally, UMKC Enactus award winning project teams have worked in partnership with Kansas City Power & Light, the City of Kansas City, H&R Block, and several international organizations.
The Hillcrest Transitional Housing program moves families from homelessness to self-sufficiency through a high-accountability, strengths-based approach. Funding for Hillcrest Transitional Housing comes from grants and donations as well as a recently opened thrift store in Lee’s Summit Missouri. Working together, Enactus has created and implemented a business and marketing plan for this new thrift store focusing on the shopper and volunteer experience. Community support of donation needs, volunteer opportunities and customer traffic are equally important aspects of the thrift store success. With that in mind, the plan builds on the sense of community and camaraderie already present in the store. The Enactus students applied their classroom education while gaining hands-on business experience and Hillcrest and its clients are benefitting.

Bloch School of Management) brings together a diverse network of university students, academic professionals and industry leaders around the shared mission of creating a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of business. By contributing their talents to projects that improve the lives of people worldwide, Enactus participants are demonstrating that individuals with a knowledge and passion for business can be a powerful force for change. Hillcrest Transitional Housing offers displaced families a disciplined educational program within a caring Christian environment. Unlike many organizations whose focus is immediate or emergency care, Hillcrest’s objective is to move families from homelessness to self-sufficiency within 90 days by addressing the total life situation of the homeless families they serve. A nonprofit 501c3 entity with five affiliates providing transitional housing programs in Buchanan, Clay, Eastern Jackson & Platte Counties, and in the state of Kansas. Hillcrest is proudly supported by our local communities and community service volunteers.
