Roadway studio project completes one year of photos, releases book

A new photography book has been released from Kansas City commercial photography studio, roadway studio.

The roadway studio project came from the minds of Colby Lysne and Ryan Nicholson, both commercial photographers in Kansas City sharing a studio space. They wanted a project that would allow them to collaborate and create a large body of work. What followed was a simple portrait project that grew over the period of their first year.

Nicholson and Lysne stuck to a simple set of rules for the portraits. They used a nine foot white seamless roll with one light source, and shot within that set. They encouraged people to come in "as you are." With the exception of a few props here and there, subjects are shot as themselves on a simple backdrop. In post, the photos are edited in black and white to focus the eye on the emotion of the subjects, not their clothing and props. The portraits show children playing in costume, female body-builders, couples of 60+ years still in love, etc. The body of work is a large collection of humanity, and the book is a prime example of it.

The book contains one photograph from every roadway studio project session done in the past year by Nicholson and Lysne. It has over 200 pages, and is priced at $200. Participants and fans alike can purchase the book through Blurb.

As for those who simply want to know how they can get involved with the project? The roadway studio project does weekend sessions throughout the year, and booking is free. And if you really love your images from the session, you can walk away with digital files for a certain price.
