Platte County to continue providing WIC services into 2013
For Immediate Release:
We are pleased to announce that the Platte County Health Department has received a contract to continue to provide WIC services for fiscal year 2013 with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. Under the terms of the contract, the Platte County Health Department will be able to serve at least 1751 participants who are eligible for WIC each month. WIC provides supplemental foods, nutrition education and referrals to pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, infants and children up to age 5. WIC participants are persons who meet WIC income guidelines and are determined by a health professional to be at medical or nutritional risk.
WIC food packages are specifically chosen to provide foods high in protein, iron, calcium, whole wheat/grains and vitamins A & C. Eligible women and children receive milk, cheese, eggs, iron fortified cereals, 100% natural fruit juice, dried or canned beans and peas or peanut butter, fresh & frozen fruits and vegetables and whole wheat/grain breads/tortillas or brown rice. Soymilk can be issued to clients with certain allergies. The WIC program strongly encourages breastfeeding for the first year of life. For those who do not breastfeed, iron fortified formula is provided as well as infant cereal and infant fruits/vegetables in 4 oz jars at the appropriate age.
By promoting and encouraging breastfeeding and improving the diets of low-income women, infants and children, the WIC program improves the health status of a vulnerable population during a critical growth period.
WIC is administered by the Platte County Health Department in Platte City and Parkville.
