Miles of Smiles Receives Grant & Welcomes New Dentists The organization is awarded a grant from Health Care Foundation of KC & adds new staff
KANSAS CITY, MO – Miles of Smiles is proud to announce the organization has been awarded a $100,000 Safety Net grant from the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City for 2013.
The Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City’s safety net health care funding promotes the development of a safety net health care system that provides quality care efficiently and effectively to the uninsured and underserved in the Health Care Foundation service area.
Miles of Smiles will use the funding to provide free dental care – preventative and restorative – to low-income school-aged children living in Clay and Platte Counties in Missouri.
The organization’s clients either have no dental insurance or are enrolled in a Missouri Health Net plan (Medicaid). There are only eight general practice dentists in the Northland area of Kansas City who will treat patients with Medicaid or no insurance – they limit the number of Medicaid patients they will treat and have waiting periods of up to three months. Without Miles of Smiles, the children the organization serves simply would not see a dentist on a regular basis.
In addition, Miles of Smiles welcomes two new dentists to the organization’s dental team. This fall Rebecca Parr, DDS and Susan McDonald, DDS joined the Miles of Smiles staff. Both Parr and McDonald graduated from UMKC Dental in May of 2012.
The Miles of Smiles dental program consists of two licensed dentists and four dental assistants, who provide treatment on-site, in schools, and at other social service organizations. For the Miles of Smiles team, it is working with the kids that make their jobs fulfilling.

Miles of Smiles provide FREE dental care to children in the Northland who do not have access to dental care. The dental care is provided by a licensed dentist and assistants, in a school setting or social service agency, church or community location for ease of access. Miles of Smiles treats children from the ages of 3 to 18, and 75% of the treatment provided is fillings and extractions. All of our patients receive a comprehensive exam, cleaning and x-rays.
