OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - On Monday, December 17, 2012, employees from CenturyLink in Overland Park will deliver gifts for 19 Head Start of Shawnee Mission families they have adopted for the 2012 holiday season. The delivery will occur at approximately 10:30 a.m. at Head Start of Shawnee Mission (8155 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park).

This is the third year for CenturyLink’s involvement with Head Start of Shawnee Mission’s holiday adoption program. “The holidays are a time of giving and a time to spread joy by helping others,” said Tom McEvoy, senior vice president of CenturyLink. “Giving back to the communities we serve is an important part of CenturyLink’s culture, and this donation of gifts allows us to demonstrate that commitment. We hope the holiday season is a happier one for the families who will benefit from these donations.”

Serving 231 poverty-level children (birth to age 5) and their families, Head Start seeks opportunities to partner with community friends to help provide needed program support and funding throughout the year, and especially during the holiday season. This season over 150 Head Start of Shawnee Mission families have been adopted by community friends for the holiday.

“For families who struggle all year just to make ends meet, the holidays can be a harsh reminder of their circumstances,” said Terrie VanZandt-Travis, Head Start’s Executive Director. “To have community friends, such as CenturyLink, participate as holiday sponsors means so much to these families – the holiday experience becomes one of joy.”

Head Start of Shawnee Mission (located at 8155 Santa Fe Drive near downtown Overland Park, Kan.) provides quality early childhood learning experiences and comprehensive child and family services which empower low-income families to maximize their success.
