Youth Volunteer Corps of Greater Kansas City Spreads Holiday Cheer Through Service

Youth give back to others during holiday season with YVC

Kansas City, MO – Youth Volunteer Corps of Greater Kansas City (YVCKC) has designed holiday projects for youth volunteers to get involved in their community and spread good cheer through service.

“Throughout the year we strive to create meaningful volunteer opportunities for youth,” said Chris Miller, program director of YVCKC. “We hope that youth learn the importance of giving throughout the year, but there’s something about volunteering during the holidays that really drives home the importance of giving back to our community.”

YVCKC offers volunteer projects for youth ages 11 to 18 to serve on Saturdays, after school, in school and during the summer. Youth are welcome to sign up for just one project or as many as they want, and volunteers come from all over the Kansas City metropolitan area.

YVCKC’s December projects include: • Cross-Lines Christmas Store – Youth will be helping at this store that serves low-income families during the holidays: Dec. 8 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (628 S. Pyle, Kansas City, Kan. 66105). • Down Syndrome Guild – A team of youth volunteers will be helping wrap more than 800 presents that will be given to families affected by Down syndrome at their annual holiday party: Dec. 8 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (10200 W. 75th St., Suite 281, Shawnee Mission, Kan. 66204). • Heritage of Overland Park – Volunteers will be visiting with the residents of this assisted living facility and working with them on several activities including a journaling class, storytelling lessons, senior exercise, games and a sing-along: Dec 8 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (10101 W. 127th St., Overland Park, Kan. 66213).

Youth must sign up prior to serving on projects by visiting YVCKC’s website at www.yvckc.org or by calling 816-743-7900.
