A museum featuring the work of Black inventors that travels to colleges, universities, public schools, libraries, and community centers is now based in Kansas City.

The museum was founded in Amherst, Massachusetts, 12 years ago by Carroll and Sandra (Armstrong) Lamb. Sandra is originally from Rosedale, Kansas. “The museum, called The Institute of Black Invention & Technology, is looking forward to becoming a significant part of Kansas City’s cultural base,” says Carroll Lamb. The institute is currently working with the KC STEM Alliance to present an exhibit entitled “The Traveling Trunk of African American and Latino Inventors,” at public schools in Kansas City. It is also marketing its services to public and private organizations as well as educational institutions.

The institute’s primary exhibit, the “Black Inventors Showcase,” features more than 100 inventors and inventions from early West African cultures through slavery in America and the present age of cellular communications. One of its most recent acquisitions is the UVC Light Sanitizing Lunch Box, which was invented in Kansas City by 12 sixth-graders at the Afrikan-Centered Education Collegium. The patent for the lunchbox is pending.

“I’m impressed by the depth of cultural resources and activities in Kansas City,” says Lamb. “In addition, the response I’ve received to what we’re bringing to the city is very encouraging.”
