Peter deSilva Tabbed To Keynote Park University’s December Commencement
Peter J. deSilva, president and chief operating officer of UMB Financial Corp., will provide the keynote address at Park University’s December Commencement ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 15. The ceremony will be held at the Community of Christ Auditorium, 1001 W. Walnut, in Independence, Mo., starting at 11 a.m.
Approximately 290 Park University undergraduates will receive their bachelor’s degree, about 125 graduate students will receive their master’s degree and 20 students will receive graduate certificates.
deSilva, who joined UMB in January 2004, also serves as president of UMB Bank and is chairman of UMB Fund Services. He has significant leadership and managerial experience across multiple areas of financial services. deSilva is directly responsible for most of UMB’s revenue producing business units and product lines, including Scout Investments, UMB Fund Services, UMB Financial Services Inc., Consumer Banking, Global Asset Management, UMB Healthcare Services and Payment Solutions.
Prior to joining UMB, deSilva spent 16 years in the financial services industry with Fidelity Investments in Boston, Cincinnati and Merrimack, N.H., including the last seven years as senior vice president for Fidelity Brokerage Company. Prior to that, he led Fidelity’s Customer Services Group as senior vice president. Before Fidelity, he worked for Lockwood/Friedman Film Corp. in a variety of leadership positions.
A member of Park University’s Board of Trustees, deSilva is an active member of the Kansas City community. He currently serves organizations such as the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City, Students in Free Enterprise and MRIGlobal. In addition, deSilva has led fundraising efforts for the American Heart Association, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Boy Scouts, Jewish Community Relations Bureau/American Jewish Committee, Boys and Girls Club, Rose Brooks, University Academy, Starlight Theater and the United Way of Greater Kansas City. deSilva is also leading the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce to make Kansas City “America’s most entrepreneurial city.”
In addition, deSilva has been recognized for his professional and civic endeavors. He has been featured as one of the Kansas City Business Journal’s “10 People to Watch” and he has been profiled in BusinessWeek as one of the nation’s “Web Smart 50.”
A native of Dartmouth, Mass., deSilva earned a Bachelor of Science degree in management from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, and he has completed master-level coursework in business administration at UMD and at Bryant College. He and his wife, Michelle, live in Kansas City, Mo., with their two daughters.
