UMKC launches one of its newest programs, The Men of Color Campus Initiative and INSIGHT: A Speakers’ Series
(KANSAS CITY, MO, Nov. 12, 2012) — The University of Missouri-Kansas City will host a kick-off celebration for one of its newest programs, The Men of Color Campus Initiative, on Tuesday, November 27, 2012, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm in the Student Union Theater Room. This event will feature Chancellor Leo E. Morton as the group’s first guest speaker for its speakers’ series, INSIGHT.
Morton, a former UMKC Trustee, has served as the institution’s Chancellor since 2008. Under his leadership the university has experienced substantial growth. Since taking the helm, UMKC’s enrollment, retention and graduation rates all have seen significant increases. As well, the University has received several sizable financial gifts to support strategic goals and objectives. Morton holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Tuskegee University and a master’s degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
INSIGHT: A Speakers’ Series has been created to highlight the successes of local and national community leaders in an effort to expose our students, particularly men of color, to credible, yet accessible role models. The series’ speakers will offer life-lessons, valuable insights and practical knowledge that result in promising opportunities.
“UMKC is committed to educating the whole student. We strive to develop students who go on, not only to successful careers, but successful lives” stated Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Mel Tyler. “We are invested in the value of developing intelligent, yet disciplined community problem-solvers. With this new series, we will bring transformative trailblazers and transnational thought-leaders, not only to students and faculty across our campus, but also to the Kansas City community”, said Chancellor Morton when discussing the potential impact of this new initiative.
Admission to this event is free, but reservations are recommended. Reservations may be made by emailing Dr. Rodney D. Smith at firstname.lastname@example.org or Darius Jackson at email@example.com.
