Dr. George Turner presents on sex and disability at 35th annual Council for Exceptional Children: Teacher Education Division (CEC-TED) conference.

Local disability and sexuality expert, Dr. George Turner, presented "Transition planning for social-sexual health: the voices of individuals with intellectual disabilities" at CEC-TED, a national teacher’s conference held in Grand Rapids, Michigan (Nov 6-10). This year’s themed “Embracing the Future of Higher Education” was poignant as Dr. Turner explored the importance of training new generations of teachers in addressing the sexual health of special education students.

“We know that students with intellectual disabilities are at a higher risk for sexual trauma and abuse, yet we do not adequately prepare them to lead a sexually safe, healthy and pleasurable life,” stated Dr. Turner. He went on to explain, “Teachers are also poorly prepared to address student sexuality education, defaulting to only addressing the so-called ‘problem behaviors’ with little time, skill or comfort for real education in the area of sexuality. It is my hope that through professional dialogue like at TED we can improve teacher preparation.”

As a disability advocate, Dr. Turner has a rich history supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). In his practice he sees adults and youth with ID to help them lead a life full of deep and rewarding relationships, free from coercion, abuse and trauma. He aides families in preparing age-appropriate sexuality education and he consults with school districts and agencies serving people with disabilities on programming, staff training, and policy development.

Dr. Turner is licensed psychotherapist and certified sex therapist. Along with another of the area’s leading disability experts, Lisa Meyers, also a clinical social worker and certified sex therapist, Dr. Turner operates a private practice, Turner Professional Group, near the Plaza. Located at 4010 Washington, Kansas City, Mo. Turner Professional Group is a holistic, spa-like practice, specializing in relationship enhancement, sexual health and personal wellness.
