MFA Acquires Propane Pardners to Expand Service Area
Kearney, Mo., Nov. 5, 2012—Propane Pardners, an affiliated company of Kearney, Mo.-based Platte-Clay Electric Cooperative and Maryville and Savannah, Mo.-based United Electric Cooperative have completed the sale of their propane operation to MFA Oil Company, a farmer-controlled cooperative. Headquartered in Columbia, Mo., MFA is one of the 10 largest propane suppliers in the U.S. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
Propane Pardners was a joint venture between Platte-Clay Electric Cooperative’s affiliate, Platte-Clay Propane, LLC.; and United Electric Cooperative’s subsidiary, United Energy Services. The electric cooperatives’ propane company served 12 counties in northwestern Missouri and Page, Ringgold and Taylor Counties in Iowa, somewhat overlapping MFA’s propane service area.
The electric cooperatives formed the propane operations in response to co-op members’ requests and the possibility of deregulation in the electric industry.
“The industry has changed for rural electric cooperatives, and we believe MFA is a good fit for the propane business,” said Gene Dorrel, general manager of United Electric Cooperative. “We believe that Propane Pardners customers will be pleased with the service and the economies of scale that MFA can provide.” “We are pleased to have the commitment of a rural and member-focused cooperative serve our customers,” said name Mike Torres, CEO and general manager of Platte-Clay Electric Cooperative. “We are looking forward to serving the Propane Pardners customers,” said James Greer, vice president, MFA Oil. “We think our new customers will be pleased with our service and will appreciate being part of another cooperative. We understand the needs of rural customers and MFA Oil will be there for them. And we are excited about an increased presence in the north Kansas City metropolitan area.” MFA Oil has more than 40,000 farmer members and is one of the ten largest suppliers of propane in the nation. The company supplies fuels, lubricants and tires to customers in Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Iowa. It operates more than 100 retail stores under the Break Time, Jiffy Lube and Big O Tire banners.
Kearney, Mo.-based Platte-Clay Electric Cooperative serves some 20,000 members in Buchanan, Caldwell, Clay, Clinton, DeKalb, Platte and Ray Counties. United Electric Cooperative, headquartered in Maryville, Mo., serves nearly 10,000 members in Andrew, Atchison, Buchanan, Clinton, Daviess, DeKalb, Harrison, Holt, Gentry, Nodaway, Platte and Worth Counties in Missouri; and in Iowa, Page, Ringgold and Taylor.
The northwestern Missouri electric cooperatives are among the 900 Touchstone Energy Cooperatives serving more than 42 million members in 47 states in primarily rural and suburban areas.
