United Way supporters shared their stories at the Celebration lunch yesterday as campaign chairs, Dr. Jill Shackelford and Jeff Manning, celebrated the campaign’s success of raising slightly more than $2 million to date.

Holiday shoppers invited to art institute exhibition, sale
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Nov. 19, 2009) –– Looking to wow friends and family with unique gifts? What could be more unique than an original work of art created by an emerging young artist? Visit the Kansas City Art Institute’s end-of-semester exhibition and sale Dec. 4-6 where a multitude of works in a wide range of media can be purchased. The exhibition and sale will feature two- and three-dimensional work by students in the departments of ceramics, digital filmmaking, fiber, graphic design, interdisciplinary arts, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. Pieces will be displayed in the various studio buildings on campus. Work can be purchased beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, but in some cases it will not be permitted to remove the purchased work from the exhibition until Sunday.

50 Plus Plans Holiday Party at Olathe 50 Plus Center on Dec. 11
11/18/09 - Join the Johnson County Park & Recreation District's 50 Plus Department for a holiday party on Dec. 11 at the Olathe Senior Center, 311 E. Park, Olathe.
The party will let participants celebrate with friends, enjoy holiday-themed treats, play bingo for free, and listen to a musical performance by the Side by Side Experience. There will even be a chance to have photos taken with Santa himself! The program will begin at 1 p.m. and last about two hours. The cost for the party is $5 for Johnson County residents or $6 for nonresidents.

11/18/09 - Visit the annual celebration of "Eagle Days" at the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge through a birdwatching trip being offered by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District.
Always a participant favorite, this trip affords a close-up view of our national bird. The trip will take place on Saturday, Dec. 5, and will include a special presentation including a close-up look at a mature Bald Eagle and tour of the refuge and a chance to look through spotting scopes to view this amazing bird. It is not unusual to observe 150 to 200 bald eagles on the refuge and surrounding area. Other wildlife such as ducks, geese, and deer have also been observed in past years.
