United Way supporters shared their stories at the Celebration lunch yesterday as campaign chairs, Dr. Jill Shackelford and Jeff Manning, celebrated the campaign’s success of raising slightly more than $2 million to date.

Black Teens Enjoy Bareboating Vacation

When her sons learned to swim while in grade school they had never heard of bareboating, Virgin Islands or catamarans. These words were not “household words” in their home or community. In fact, none of their acquaintances would put the three words together to describe a vacation of a lifetime. After all, their neighborhood landscape was not equipped with public swimming pools. Or private pools for that matter. Vacation was defined as a road trip to a relatives’ house. There it wasn’t a requirement to know how to swim, snorkel or even drive a dinghy.

Building Hope Missouri Housing Commission Awards Tax Credits

Independence, Mo., (November 12, 2009) – Hope House, Missouri’s largest provider of domestic violence services received approval from the Missouri Housing Development Commission for Affordable Housing Assistance Program (AHAP) tax credits. Hope House will offer up to $1,000,000 in credits to donors making gifts to its capital campaign, “Building Hope”. These 55% credits are transferrable and may also be sold. The $5 million dollar campaign has received gifts and pledges totaling $3,667,251. The campaign is for the construction of a new, larger therapy building and for renovations to the existing four buildings at Hope House’s Independence campus. MaryAnne Metheny, CEO states, “These tax credits are a wonderful opportunity for donors to leverage their charitable giving, we’re thrilled to have these available for our donors.”

Youth Volunteers to spend “One Homeless Night”

Armed with little more than the clothes on their backs and a sleeping bag, 15 local youth will be camping out behind the Roeland Park City Hall at 4600 W 51st Street in Roeland Park, KS this Friday, November 13, to raise awareness about youth homelessness.

Kansas City Symphony Hosts TubaChristmas 2009 on Friday, December 4

TubaChristmas 2009 will be hosted by The Kansas City Symphony on Friday, December 4. This event will be one of 240 TubaChristmas concerts presented around the United States in tribute to the late artist/teacher William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day 1902. The TubaChristmas ensemble performs traditional Christmas carols and songs, many of which were arranged by noted American composer Alec Wilder, who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980. The memories of Bell and Wilder are celebrated in the annual performances of TubaChristmas groups around the nation.

Kansas City Symphony Begins Holiday Season with Handel's Messiah

(KANSAS CITY) – The Kansas City Symphony marks the beginning of the holiday season with Handel’s Messiah on Thanksgiving weekend. The Kansas City Symphony and Chorus join with the Independence Messiah Choir for this mosaic of the scriptures, which remains Handel’s most famous work. Products donated for local outreach program serving homeless youth

Kansas City, Missouri. November 2, 2009-StandUp for Kids-Kansas City announced they are donating 90 backpacks containing food and personal care products to the ReStart Youth Network. Girl Scout Troop #110 from Olathe collected the backpacks and items to donate. The local chapter of Stand Up For Kids is a relatively new organization and one of the few programs offering assistance to homeless youth.
