11/18/09 - Visit the annual celebration of "Eagle Days" at the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge through a birdwatching trip being offered by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District.

Always a participant favorite, this trip affords a close-up view of our national bird. The trip will take place on Saturday, Dec. 5, and will include a special presentation including a close-up look at a mature Bald Eagle and tour of the refuge and a chance to look through spotting scopes to view this amazing bird. It is not unusual to observe 150 to 200 bald eagles on the refuge and surrounding area. Other wildlife such as ducks, geese, and deer have also been observed in past years. When her sons learned to swim while in grade school they had never heard of bareboating, Virgin Islands or catamarans. These words were not “household words” in their home or community. In fact, none of their acquaintances would put the three words together to describe a vacation of a lifetime. After all, their neighborhood landscape was not equipped with public swimming pools. Or private pools for that matter. Vacation was defined as a road trip to a relatives’ house. There it wasn’t a requirement to know how to swim, snorkel or even drive a dinghy.

TubaChristmas 2009 will be hosted by The Kansas City Symphony on Friday, December 4. This event will be one of 240 TubaChristmas concerts presented around the United States in tribute to the late artist/teacher William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day 1902. The TubaChristmas ensemble performs traditional Christmas carols and songs, many of which were arranged by noted American composer Alec Wilder, who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980. The memories of Bell and Wilder are celebrated in the annual performances of TubaChristmas groups around the nation.

On Sunday, December 13th, The Good Samaritan Project will present their 2nd annual Holiday Homes Tour in The Historic Northeast Neighborhood of Scarritt Renaissance. The tour features 5 historic mansions along Gladstone Blvd. decorated in Holiday splendor, hard hat tours of The Kansas City Museum, carriage rides, and strolling carolers, all followed by a concert by The KC Boys Choir and The KC Girls Choir at The Melrose United Methodist Church.

(KANSAS CITY) – The Kansas City Symphony marks the beginning of the holiday season with Handel’s Messiah on Thanksgiving weekend. The Kansas City Symphony and Chorus join with the Independence Messiah Choir for this mosaic of the scriptures, which remains Handel’s most famous work. With over 400 musicians on stage, it is one of the most triumphant choral pieces ever written. Messiah is best known for its familiar “Hallelujah” chorus.

“A séance for piano and orchestra" -- ghosts of music's past weave through the three movement concerto

(Kansas City) - The Kansas City Symphony will present the world premiere of Lost Souls - A Piano Concerto by Israeli composer Avner Dorman on November 20-22. Lost Souls tell the haunting story of a séance summoning ghosts of concertos past, ending in an exorcism. Praised by Gramophone Magazine as “a fresh, young voice, worth following,” Avner Dorman is a rising star composer whose orchestral works were recently performed by the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

10/21/09 - The Johnson County Park & Recreation District's yearly 50 Plus birdwatching trip to the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge is a day filled with wildlife viewing and an annual favorite.

The Titanic, arguably the most famous shipwreck of modern times, sits on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean covered with two and a half miles of water – six tons of pressure to the square inch. Certainly that would be enough to keep its inhabitants confined, or, is it . . . ?

9/16/09 - Times are still available for fall hayrides at Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee, or Heritage Park, 16000 Pflumm Road, Olathe. Organized hayrides for groups are available through Nov. 22 and conclude with a warm campfire where apple cider and marshmallows await!

Lexington, Missouri, is known for its historic homes, ranging from antebellum through almost every Victorian style. Five of these homes will be open during the 2009 Old Homes Tour on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 13. The Tour opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday. Homes close at 4 p.m. both days. Buses will run on a shuttle route between homes, starting at the Lexington Tourism Bureau, 927 Main St.

KANSAS CITY SYMPHONY RECEIVES BRUNO WALTER MEMORIAL FOUNDATION GRANTS

Prestigious award supports emerging conductors

(April 15, 2009) – The Kansas City Symphony has been awarded a grant for the 2009-10 season from the Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation in support of its associate conductor position. Each year the Foundation awards grants to only three orchestras in the nation, and so this is a prestigious accomplishment. In addition to a grant of $7,500 to the orchestra to support the associate conductor position, KCS Associate Conductor Steven Jarvi will receive a career development grant of $2,500 to further his training. For next season, Jarvi’s position will be known as the Bruno Walter Associate Conductor Chair.

What: “Giggle With Gilda,” a comedy improv fundraising event to benefit Gilda’s Club Kansas City, will feature The Second City Touring Company’s current national production, “Deface the Nation.” Saturday Night Live comedian and former Kansas City resident Jason Sudeikis will perform with the renowned comedy-improv troupe in honor of his mother Kathy Sudeikis, a breast cancer survivor. Two tickets to attend a Saturday Night Live show will be raffled at the event. Proceeds will help open Gilda’s Club Kansas City.

The fourth annual Symphony in the Flint Hills concert will be held Saturday, June 13 at 6:45pm.
