'Darwin Goes Fishing' lecture presented at Linda K. Hall Library

For Immediate Release

October 23, 2009

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Ask the average person on the street what they associate with Charles Darwin and most of them might say monkeys, thanks to the theory of evolution; and yet, Darwin, in his 5-year voyage around the world on the H.M.S. Beagle, did not study primates at all. He focused on the flora and fauna of the world and this included marine life. Persons interested in Darwin’s “fish stories” should head to the Linda Hall Library on October 29, 2009, for Darwin Goes Fishing: the Voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle and its Impact. The talk will be presented by Dr. Daniel Pauly, marine biologist and director of the Fisheries Centre, University of British Columbia, Vancouver. He is the author of Darwin’s Fishes: An Encyclopedia of Ichthyology, Ecology, and Evolution (Cambridge, 2004). In addition, he developed FishBase, the premier web-based encyclopedia of fish species.
