TubaChristmas 2009 will be hosted by The Kansas City Symphony on Friday, December 4. This event will be one of 240 TubaChristmas concerts presented around the United States in tribute to the late artist/teacher William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day 1902. The TubaChristmas ensemble performs traditional Christmas carols and songs, many of which were arranged by noted American composer Alec Wilder, who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980. The memories of Bell and Wilder are celebrated in the annual performances of TubaChristmas groups around the nation.

(KANSAS CITY) – The Kansas City Symphony marks the beginning of the holiday season with Handel’s Messiah on Thanksgiving weekend. The Kansas City Symphony and Chorus join with the Independence Messiah Choir for this mosaic of the scriptures, which remains Handel’s most famous work. With over 400 musicians on stage, it is one of the most triumphant choral pieces ever written. Messiah is best known for its familiar “Hallelujah” chorus.

11/04/09 - Youth ages three to six can get into the holiday spirit through a new dance program being offered by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District in early December.

The program is called Jingle Bell Dance. Participants will make their own jingle bell ringer, do the hop, sing the song, and have a ringing good time. All supplies and a treat are included. “A séance for piano and orchestra" -- ghosts of music's past weave through the three movement concerto

(Kansas City) - The Kansas City Symphony will present the world premiere of Lost Souls - A Piano Concerto by Israeli composer Avner Dorman on November 20-22. Lost Souls tell the haunting story of a séance summoning ghosts of concertos past, ending in an exorcism. Praised by Gramophone Magazine as “a fresh, young voice, worth following,” Avner Dorman is a rising star composer whose orchestral works were recently performed by the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Ballet North announces place and time information for the upcoming Nutcracker School Tour occurring in December.

Nutcracker School Tour presents all the famous dances from Petipa's masterpiece of choreography set to Tchaikovsky's timeless score along with a complete traveling set with backdrops, lighting, sound, performance floor, full costume and magic galore - all of which is brought directly into schools avoiding the punitive cost and organizational hardships of transporting students to and from distant event locations.

Louis and Company will be sponsoring another free kids dance team for kids ages 8-16. Auditions will be on Friday, September 11 at 5pm and Saturday, September 12 at 3pm. The nine week class will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:30 beginning September 14.

JPDC WINS NATIONAL COMPETITION!
The Jody Phillips Dance Company Competitive Junior and Senior Company has won a National Title in Branson, MO! Fifty members of the JPDC Competitive Team competed at the Regional Competition in Overland Park, Kansas in April, where they qualified and won top scores! Fundraising, saving, babysitting and a silent auction during a benefit performance was some of the ways the students were able to pay for their costumes and travel. The students competed in several categories where they were recognized for their excellent technique and performance skills. At National's, The JPDC Company received 5-Platinums, 14-High Gold's, 6-Golds, 2 Precision Awards, Showmanship Award, Technique Award, Fabulous Feet Award, and Choreography Award! KANSAS CITY, MO – Sonya Tayeh has always been known as a dynamic whirlwind of movement and energy onstage, but her career has taken on a new level of intensity as of late. Born in New York but with deep roots in Detroit, Tayeh’s recent work has found her bringing her unique style as both a choreographer and a judge to the primetime television masses via the FOX Network’s reality dance competition SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. KANSAS CITY SYMPHONY RECEIVES BRUNO WALTER MEMORIAL FOUNDATION GRANTS

Prestigious award supports emerging conductors

(April 15, 2009) – The Kansas City Symphony has been awarded a grant for the 2009-10 season from the Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation in support of its associate conductor position. Each year the Foundation awards grants to only three orchestras in the nation, and so this is a prestigious accomplishment. In addition to a grant of $7,500 to the orchestra to support the associate conductor position, KCS Associate Conductor Steven Jarvi will receive a career development grant of $2,500 to further his training. For next season, Jarvi’s position will be known as the Bruno Walter Associate Conductor Chair.
