Acclaimed pianist Sam Stryke (aka Struyk) comes to The University of Kansas Edwards Campus for a special Christmas Jazz Concert on December 8 at 7 pm. Called “a formidable talent” by On-The-Town Magazine, Stryke shows off his jazz chops while still delivering his characteristically nostalgic and melodic treatment of Christmas favorites. Think Vince Guaraldi’s Charlie Brown Christmas. Tickets are FREE.

More than 70 members of the Heart of America Barbershoppers will sing holiday favorites in a free Christmas Concert in the fellowship hall at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 700 E. 110th St., Kansas City, Mo.

TubaChristmas 2009 will be hosted by The Kansas City Symphony on Friday, December 4. This event will be one of 240 TubaChristmas concerts presented around the United States in tribute to the late artist/teacher William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day 1902. The TubaChristmas ensemble performs traditional Christmas carols and songs, many of which were arranged by noted American composer Alec Wilder, who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980. The memories of Bell and Wilder are celebrated in the annual performances of TubaChristmas groups around the nation.

(KANSAS CITY) – The Kansas City Symphony marks the beginning of the holiday season with Handel’s Messiah on Thanksgiving weekend. The Kansas City Symphony and Chorus join with the Independence Messiah Choir for this mosaic of the scriptures, which remains Handel’s most famous work. With over 400 musicians on stage, it is one of the most triumphant choral pieces ever written. Messiah is best known for its familiar “Hallelujah” chorus.

“A séance for piano and orchestra" -- ghosts of music's past weave through the three movement concerto

(Kansas City) - The Kansas City Symphony will present the world premiere of Lost Souls - A Piano Concerto by Israeli composer Avner Dorman on November 20-22. Lost Souls tell the haunting story of a séance summoning ghosts of concertos past, ending in an exorcism. Praised by Gramophone Magazine as “a fresh, young voice, worth following,” Avner Dorman is a rising star composer whose orchestral works were recently performed by the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

For the second year in a row, the Grain Valley Marching Eagles closed out the month of October with a “Halloween” rehearsal Friday evening at which many band members wore costumes before taking part in a ‘Trunk or Treat’ hosted by the Band Parents Association. They then followed that Marching Eagle tradition up with what is becoming another tradition; a trip to Columbia, MO the next morning to participate in the Mizzou Champion of Champions marching festival at MU’s Faurot Field.

Besides holding a patent in the stringed instrument amplification field, he has also built more than 200 guitars, basses, mandolins and violins using his unique approach to amplified acoustic instruments. For more than thirty years he has lent his skills to repairing fretted instruments, acquired a US patent in the field of acoustic amplification, and also spent several years as the Quality Assurance Engineer in a major US guitar factory. While his instruments may appear to be solid body electric designs, the sonic signature is much more “acoustic” than “electric“.

A Concert Event Coming to Bentonville High School With Star-Studded List of Southern Gospel and Bluegrass Acts

(Bentonville,AR) The Brumley’s are returning to N.W. Arkansas and all area music fans on May 14 and 15, 2010. The 1st Annual Brumley Musicfest concert will be held at Bentonville, AR High School and will include many of the top southern gospel and bluegrass music acts from around the country. Acts currently scheduled to appear are The Grascals, Brian Free & Assurance, Karen Peck & New River, The Chuckwagon Gang, The Dove Brothers Quartet, The Diplomats, and Little Roy & Lizzie. Mark Bishop and Aaron Wilburn will emcee and perform both nights.

Rick Malsick will perform at SPIN! Neapolitan Pizza in Overland Park from 6 – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13. This will be the final night of this season’s Folk on the Patio series, produced at all four SPIN! restaurants by POUNCE Marketing. Malsick has more than 25 years of experience as a musician, songwriter, playwright, and actor. He is an accomplished finger-style guitarist, playing mostly ragtime, jazz, and blues, with some sweet and slow tunes thrown in for good measure. Malsick plays regularly in the Kansas City area at a variety of venues, including bars, coffeehouses, and restaurants. His most recent CD, Athena, was released this summer. Duane Woner will play his original music at SPIN! Neapolitan Pizza in Lee’s Summit on Tuesday, October 13 from 6-8 p.m.. This will be the final performance of this season’s Folk on the Patio series, produced at all four SPIN! restaurants by POUNCE Marketing. Woner has been playing music in Kansas City since the early 60s. He plays bass in a number of bands and performs his original music in coffeehouses, bars, and outdoor venues throughout the city. Duane’s music has been described as “mid-western alternative folk country rock with an occasional but seriously bizarre twist of weird and childlike humor.” Guess that says it all! Harry Hewlett will play his original music at SPIN! Neapolitan Pizza in Olathe on Tuesday, October 13 from 6-8 p.m. This will be the final performance of this season’s Folk on the Patio series, produced at all four SPIN! restaurants by POUNCE Marketing. Hewlett grew up on a cotton farm in west Texas and now lives in the Kansas City area, where he writes, sings, and plays the guitar and harmonica. Last year he performed hundreds of shows at retirement homes, coffee shops, and other venues. His concerts are full of humor and feature original songs from his latest CD, Tahoka Daisy.

Jim Thomas will perform at SPIN! Neapolitan Pizza on Main Street from 6 – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13. Thomas has performed in bands and groups throughout the South and Midwest, and has recently started writing and performing his own material as a solo act. Street Corner Choir, the musical duo of David Hakan and Lezlie Revelle, will play their original music at SPIN! Hakan has been recording and performing his original music since 1999. He has played small clubs and house concerts from Baltimore to Houston. Revelle comes from a family where music was the second language. Tim Hazlett will perform at SPIN!
