United Way supporters shared their stories at the Celebration lunch yesterday as campaign chairs, Dr. Jill Shackelford and Jeff Manning, celebrated the campaign’s success of raising slightly more than $2 million to date.

Stuff the Mayflower Event to Benefit Harvesters

KANSAS CITY IS INVITED TO “STUFF THE MAYFLOWER”
– Help Harvesters Feed Kansas City’s Hungry this Holiday Season –

(Kansas City, Mo.)…Price Chopper has teamed up with Star 102 and Harvesters Food Bank to fill a moving truck with food donations for people in need in Kansas City. The “Stuff the Mayflower” event will take place November 23rd - 25th at Cosentino's Price Chopper at 119th and Metcalf in Overland Park. All of the donated food will go to the Harvesters. The public can also drop off food donations at any of the Metro’s other 48 Price Chopper stores during this time.

Youth Volunteers to spend “One Homeless Night”

Armed with little more than the clothes on their backs and a sleeping bag, 15 local youth will be camping out behind the Roeland Park City Hall at 4600 W 51st Street in Roeland Park, KS this Friday, November 13, to raise awareness about youth homelessness.

Kansas City Symphony Hosts TubaChristmas 2009 on Friday, December 4

TubaChristmas 2009 will be hosted by The Kansas City Symphony on Friday, December 4. This event will be one of 240 TubaChristmas concerts presented around the United States in tribute to the late artist/teacher William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day 1902. The TubaChristmas ensemble performs traditional Christmas carols and songs, many of which were arranged by noted American composer Alec Wilder, who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980. The memories of Bell and Wilder are celebrated in the annual performances of TubaChristmas groups around the nation.

Kansas City Symphony Begins Holiday Season with Handel's Messiah

(KANSAS CITY) – The Kansas City Symphony marks the beginning of the holiday season with Handel’s Messiah on Thanksgiving weekend. Hopeful Tomorrow National Kick-A-Thon

Hopeful Tomorrow, a national children’s charity that provides tuition for underprivileged and at-risk youth to enable them to participate in martial arts programs, is gearing up for its second World Martial Arts Day on October 17, 2009. The theme for this year’s event is “Kickin’ in the USA”. Martial artists across the United States are expected to execute kicks to break the world record, which stands at more than 8.3 million kicks in one hour (Black Belt Magazine Oct 2009). Dragon Family Martial Arts Center will be joining the team this year with youth and adult members. Participants will spend the day kicking their hearts out to raise funds for the charity. KANSAS CITY, MO – Cheyanne Ingram’s face is the face of the future at Heart of America Indian Center – and that future is bright. “We’re sprucing the place up for our open house,” she smiles, brushing a strand of glossy hair from her forehead. Around her, volunteers splashed with various paint colors bustle about – cleaning, spackling, painting – to prepare for the October 16 event. “We’ve been around for so long, but many people don’t even know we’re here. When?
Monday, October 26th, 2009 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Raymore Peculiar High School parking lot located at 20801 S. School Rd. Peculiar, MO 64078
What is trunk or treat?
Children from around the community will be asked to come to the Raymore-Peculiar High School to participate in a form of trick or treating. The high school parking lot will be lined up with cars that have open trunks decorated in Halloween décor and filled with candy. The children can go trick or treating from car to car dressed in their favorite costume collecting candy. In addition to this, there will be numerous carnival games and contests available for the children.

Half Price Books Tackles Illiteracy Problem with A,E,I,O & You Volunteer Recruitment Program

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (September, 2009) —While the declining economy has forced many people from their jobs, it has pushed them into the door of literacy organizations nationwide looking for help to boost literacy and job skills. While the call for help is a good thing, it has left many literacy groups in need of additional volunteers to make sure students get the help they need. Each year from February 1 through April 15, AARP Tax-Aide volunteers prepare (free of charge) federal, state and local tax returns for low- and middle -income taxpayers, with special attention to those age 60 and older. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. You don’t need to be an AARP member or be a retiree to volunteer (or to receive assistance from AARP Tax-Aide volunteers).
