Sam Stryke’s free Christmas jazz concert slated 7 p.m. Dec. 8 at KU Edwards Campus

Acclaimed pianist Sam Stryke (aka Struyk) comes to The University of Kansas Edwards Campus for a special Christmas Jazz Concert on December 8 at 7 pm. Called “a formidable talent” by On-The-Town Magazine, Stryke shows off his jazz chops while still delivering his characteristically nostalgic and melodic treatment of Christmas favorites. Think Vince Guaraldi’s Charlie Brown Christmas. Tickets are FREE.

50 Plus Plans Holiday Party at Olathe 50 Plus Center on Dec. 11

11/18/09 - Join the Johnson County Park & Recreation District's 50 Plus Department for a holiday party on Dec. 11 at the Olathe Senior Center, 311 E. Park, Olathe.

The party will let participants celebrate with friends, enjoy holiday-themed treats, play bingo for free, and listen to a musical performance by the Side by Side Experience. There will even be a chance to have photos taken with Santa himself! The program will begin at 1 p.m. and last about two hours. The cost for the party is $5 for Johnson County residents or $6 for nonresidents.

Squaw Creek Eagle Days trip offered on Dec. 5

11/18/09 - Visit the annual celebration of "Eagle Days" at the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge through a birdwatching trip being offered by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District.

Always a participant favorite, this trip affords a close-up view of our national bird. The trip will take place on Saturday, Dec. 5, and will include a special presentation including a close-up look at a mature Bald Eagle and tour of the refuge and a chance to look through spotting scopes to view this amazing bird. It is not unusual to observe 150 to 200 bald eagles on the refuge and surrounding area. Other wildlife such as ducks, geese, and deer have also been observed in past years. The Sounds of Fall

Thursday, November fifth the Grain Valley High School gymnasium played host to a concert featuring the Grain Valley Marching Eagles in their annual performance closing out the marching season. They were joined by the Grain Valley Middle School 8th grade band, augmented by the 7th grade honors band, who performed before the largest and possibly most enthusiastic audience of their young careers.

Kansas City Symphony Hosts TubaChristmas 2009 on Friday, December 4

TubaChristmas 2009 will be hosted by The Kansas City Symphony on Friday, December 4. This event will be one of 240 TubaChristmas concerts presented around the United States in tribute to the late artist/teacher William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day 1902. The TubaChristmas ensemble performs traditional Christmas carols and songs, many of which were arranged by noted American composer Alec Wilder, who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980. The memories of Bell and Wilder are celebrated in the annual performances of TubaChristmas groups around the nation.

Kansas City Symphony Begins Holiday Season with Handel's Messiah

(KANSAS CITY) – The Kansas City Symphony marks the beginning of the holiday season with Handel’s Messiah on Thanksgiving weekend. The Kansas City Symphony and Chorus join with the Independence Messiah Choir for this mosaic of the scriptures, which remains Handel’s most famous work. With over 400 musicians on stage, it is one of the most triumphant choral pieces ever written. Messiah is best known for its familiar “Hallelujah” chorus.

Störling Dance Theater Presents ‘The Little Match Girl’

Kansas City-area dance group to perform Hans Christian Andersen classic

Kansas City — After receiving critical acclaim for its original productions of “Underground” and “Butterfly,” Störling Dance Theater is now preparing to perform one of Hans Christian Andersen’s classics. Andersen originally wrote the story based on his mother’s life and to raise public awareness concerning child exploitation. With the growing awareness of the plight of millions of children around the world with such films as “Kavi” shining light on this problem, Mona Störling –Enna, artistic director for Störling Dance Theater, sought to reinvigorate “The Little Match Girl” to play her part in improving the lives of the abused.
