Black Teens Enjoy Bareboating Vacation

When her sons learned to swim while in grade school they had never heard of bareboating, Virgin Islands or catamarans. These words were not “household words” in their home or community. In fact, none of their acquaintances would put the three words together to describe a vacation of a lifetime. After all, their neighborhood landscape was not equipped with public swimming pools. Or private pools for that matter. Vacation was defined as a road trip to a relatives’ house. There it wasn’t a requirement to know how to swim, snorkel or even drive a dinghy.

Kansas City Symphony Hosts TubaChristmas 2009 on Friday, December 4
TubaChristmas 2009 will be hosted by The Kansas City Symphony on Friday, December 4. This event will be one of 240 TubaChristmas concerts presented around the United States in tribute to the late artist/teacher William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day 1902. The TubaChristmas ensemble performs traditional Christmas carols and songs, many of which were arranged by noted American composer Alec Wilder, who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980. The memories of Bell and Wilder are celebrated in the annual performances of TubaChristmas groups around the nation.

Kansas City Symphony Begins Holiday Season with Handel's Messiah
(KANSAS CITY) – The Kansas City Symphony marks the beginning of the holiday season with Handel’s Messiah on Thanksgiving weekend. The Kansas City Symphony and Chorus join with the Independence Messiah Choir for this mosaic of the scriptures, which remains Handel’s most famous work. With over 400 musicians on stage, it is one of the most triumphant choral pieces ever written. Messiah is best known for its familiar “Hallelujah” chorus.

(Kansas City) - The Kansas City Symphony will present the world premiere of Lost Souls - A Piano Concerto by Israeli composer Avner Dorman on November 20-22. Lost Souls tell the haunting story of a séance summoning ghosts of concertos past, ending in an exorcism. Praised by Gramophone Magazine as “a fresh, young voice, worth following,” Avner Dorman is a rising star composer whose orchestral works were recently performed by the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Hopeful Tomorrow National Kick-A-Thon
Hopeful Tomorrow, a national children’s charity that provides tuition for underprivileged and at-risk youth to enable them to participate in martial arts programs, is gearing up for its second World Martial Arts Day on October 17, 2009. The theme for this year’s event is “Kickin’ in the USA”. Martial artists across the United States are expected to execute kicks to break the world record, which stands at more than 8.3 million kicks in one hour (Black Belt Magazine Oct 2009). Dragon Family Martial Arts Center will be joining the team this year with youth and adult members. Participants will spend the day kicking their hearts out to raise funds for the charity. When?
Monday, October 26th, 2009 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Raymore Peculiar High School parking lot located at 20801 S. School Rd. Peculiar, MO 64078
What is trunk or treat?
Children from around the community will be asked to come to the Raymore-Peculiar High School to participate in a form of trick or treating. The high school parking lot will be lined up with cars that have open trunks decorated in Halloween décor and filled with candy. The children can go trick or treating from car to car dressed in their favorite costume collecting candy. In addition to this, there will be numerous carnival games and contests available for the children.

Johnson County Library to open new early literacy space
The Johnson County Library is opening a new early literacy space at the Antioch Neighborhood Library, 8700 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Merriam, KS in September. The program, 6 by 6, Ready to Read: Six Skills by Six Years, provides an interactive environment designed especially for preschool-aged children (birth to six years old) to share literacy activities with their parents and caregivers. Together they can explore engaging activities then enhance children’s pre-reading skills.

Free kids ballroom dance team
Louis and Company will be sponsoring another free kids dance team for kids ages 8-16. Auditions will be on Friday, September 11 at 5pm and Saturday, September 12 at 3pm. The nine week class will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:30 beginning September 14.
