Homes of Note:
Leawood whole-house remodel features sustainable renovation
Contractor Earthway Enterprises used renewable resources and recycled as much material as possible when remodeling Scott and Kelsey Kelley’s home at 8741 Aberdeen, Leawood, Kan. The whole-house remodel features an open floor plan of the kitchen, dining room and living room, custom cabinets and a master bedroom addition. Scott B. Kelley, CR, owner of Earthway Enterprises, is in the process of establishing a Green Building Council and certification program for the Kansas City area that will promote energy efficiency and environmentally friendly building solutions with the residential and remodeling industries.
A 1940’s kitchen redo
The 1940’s kitchen of Tom and Sherry Hilleary desperately needed to be updated. The dated décor and dysfunctional layout required removing two load-bearing walls, expanding the kitchen into the garage, and opening the adjacent dining room and old breakfast room. The home is located at 420 W. 50th St. in Kansas City, Mo. The contractor is Randy Metzler, CR, owner of Metzler Remodeling, Inc.
A 1920’s update that some said could not be done
Several home remodelers told Ed and Ann McLiney that it would be impossible to remove structural walls to open up the kitchen of their 1920’s home. CMC Remodeling, Inc. was able to accomplish the ‘impossible’ by concealing two new steel beams in the ceiling in order to create the open, ‘farmhouse-style kitchen.’ CMC Remodeling owner, Charles Copeland, CKBR, added a large, custom cherry table with drawers on one side that double as a well-used work space, a farmhouse sink, granite counters, a pantry and powder room. The home is located at 644 W. 60th Terr., Kansas City, Mo.
Ward Parkway home blends old and new
Rob and Susan Smith wanted to update their kitchen in their three-story turn-of-the-century Ward Parkway home, while maintaining the home’s traditional feel. Contractor Mike Steed, CR, owner of Steed Remodeling, revised the floor plan to create a large open space, better work flow and room for a full-size breakfast table. A mudroom was added adjacent to the kitchen for functional storage. Prior to this remodel project, the homeowners had Steed Remodeling paint their exterior, add new metal roofs, and remodel the master suite and three baths. The home is located at 1055 W. 55th St., Kansas City, Mo.
The Kansas City chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), is a professional organization representing 298 professional remodeling experts, including contractors, manufacturers, distributors and wholesalers and lenders. NARI members must complete an extensive application process, be in business for at least one year and follow the organization’s code of ethics.
