Activist groups to raise 20,000 pounds of food for hungry animals
The Northland Pet Pantry is a non-profit 501c3 organization that began in May, 2009 when three animal rescue organizations; the Northland Animal Welfare Society (NAWS), Excelsior Springs Friends of Animals and Katty Shack came together.
The three organizations saw the increasing need for pet food for families who were affected by the depths of the economic recession. According to the ASPCA the statistics showed that somewhere between 500,000 and 1 million companion animals were at serious risk of becoming homeless because owners could not afford to feed them.
The Northland Pet Pantry averages two food drives each month at several different locations, making it convenient and easy for pet owners to access the free and donated food.
