Hundreds of Needy Johnson County Residents to be Served Free Thanksgiving Eve Meal
Turkey Eve Meal Flyer: FLyer to communicate the free dinner to the community
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (November 18, 2009) - Many consider Johnson County to be one of the most affluent counties in the country. But did you know that according to United Community Services, back in 2007 close to 22,000 Johnson County residents lived at or below the Federal Poverty Level? Officials with the Health Partnership Clinic of Johnson County say 64% of patients they saw last year had incomes below federal poverty level. Many Johnson County families are in hardship, and a simple meal with those who care can provide hope and understanding to many dealing with life’s uncertainties.
To better serve the needy in Johnson County, Atonement Lutheran Church will host a Thanksgiving Eve dinner on Wednesday November 25th from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. All who attend will be offered a hot meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and all the trimmings free of charge. There will be enough food to serve several hundred people and it will be available until the food runs out. The media are encouraged to attend to help address the problem of hunger and need in Johnson County. This event is sponsored by Valley View Bank and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Besides the meal, local musicians will perform and representatives from Blessings Abound Thrift Store, SAFEHOME and the Health Partnership Clinic of Johnson County will be on hand.
