Metro Homeschool Robotics Take TOP Awards in BEST Competition
Metro Homeschool Robotics Press Release for October 31, 2009
The Metro Homeschool Robotics Team, comprised of 25 middle and high school students, participated in the River Valley BEST Robotics hub competition in Fort Smith Arkansas on October 31, 2009. The team received the following awards: First Place BEST Award, First Place Robot Competition Award, Founders Award, Most Elegant Award, and BEST Technical Notebook Award.
The BEST Award is based on a technical notebook written by the students, a tradeshow display booth designed and built by the students, robot performance during the game, as well as, spirit and sportsmanship demonstrated during the competition. The BEST Award is considered the most prestigious of all the awards presented.
The Founders Award is awarded to the team that makes best use of the engineering process in consideration of offensive and defensive capabilities in machine design.
The Most Elegant award is given to the team whose machine demonstrates the best design and execution of the game - the machine that makes you say “Wow!”
Based on the team’s performance in the hub competition, they qualified to participate in the Frontier Trails Regionals Competition December 3rd through 5th in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
The Metro Homeschool Robotics Team is made up of students from the following communities in Missouri: Kansas City, Lee’s Summit, Pleasant Hill, Blue Springs, Grain Valley, Raytown, and Independence. Students also hail from Shawnee and Overland Park, Kansas. The team meets at a member’s home in Blue Springs. The students are a combination of boys and girls ranging in ages from 11 through 18. The team was formed in December of 2007.
BEST, which stands for Boosting Engineering Science and Technology, is a middle and high school robotics competition whose mission is to engage and excite students about engineering, science, and technology as well as inspire them to pursue careers in these fields.
